Katherine Keltner's newest series, "Exquisite Bind," is a collection of photographs and videos of the artist wrapping and unwrapping parts of her body with sewing thread to examine the human form as a work of abstract beauty.
The Oklahoma native is a successful artist living and working in New York, but she's coming home to talk about her series Thursday at Untitled [ArtSpace], 1 N.E. Third.
In her lecture, Keltner will discuss the process and inspiration of her binding art and what makes it important to her.
"She's doing something that's really unique " definitely not the type of work that's being made by anyone else," said Nicole Bungert, director of operations of the nonprofit arts organization. "I think it's always interesting to hear an artist's story behind what they are working on at that moment, and to get some perspective on some really interesting work."
PROCESS
Keltner digitally manipulates the photographs into abstract images and adds graphite and thread on top. Each canvas portrays images of repression, struggle and liberation. Her work has been displayed in a number of galleries in New York City and Italy, and she has taught at several colleges and universities.
Guests are invited to the reception at 5:30 p.m. for refreshments, and the lecture begins at 6 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
