Bridge safety, Oklahoma roads and alternative fuels will be the focus of the 2007 Oklahoma Transportation Forum slated Thursday and Friday at the Reed Center in Midwest City.

Lt. Gov. Jari Askins will host the event, which will include voices from agency officials across the state and private sectors of transportation.

The Oklahoma Good Roads & Transportation Association and Oklahoma Progress magazine are sponsoring the event, now in its 14th incarnation. This is the first time for the forum to be hosted by an elected official.

TOPICS
One important addition to the event is a presentation of new technology that can monitor bridge conditions under traffic and other load factors. After the deadly Interstate 35 Mississippi River bridge collapse in Minneapolis, Askins said no topic could be timelier.

University of Oklahoma professor David Baldwin will present "Safety Warning & Awareness Technology for Bridges." Baldwin directs a university research program on developing several interrelated technologies designed to extend the life of bridges by lessening the impact of heavy vehicles on them. The technology also includes a sensor system to monitor bridge conditions.

"This technology has tremendous potential for bridge safety," Baldwin said in a release. "Our ultimate goal is to determine if a bridge is becoming unsafe before it becomes unsafe."

The event is open to the public and costs $50. For more information, call 208-8777 or e-mail info@ccprokc.com. "Lisa Janssen
