Youth Art Month stresses importance of art education

Students gift art to state legislators to raise awareness

Courtney Silva March 9th, 2011

All across the United States, Youth Art Month is being celebrated to promote arts education in schools, and Oklahoma is getting in on the action.

Schools from across the state are participating in events such as art shows and contests to emphasize the importance of art education, said Lisa Taulman, Oklahoma Art Educators Association chair and art teacher at Crooked Oak Public Schools.

“Art education is important for many reasons,” she said. “Studies have shown that if a student participates in the arts, they do considerably well in other subjects. The arts develop creativity within the child and it helps them to be very well-rounded.”

Last week, students and teachers rallied at the state Capitol to raise awareness for art education, gifting student-created artwork to each legislator. In support of Youth Art Month, the State Superintendent Elementary Art Showcase is on display at the Capitol until March 24. The gallery showcases 120 works of art created by students statewide.

“Youth Art Month is not only to raise awareness, but to celebrate these kids and their success in the arts,” Taulman said.
