Is there a better time of the year to play around with the accessories up top?

Jenny Coon Peterson July 6th, 2011

Sunglasses, headbands, hats — summer is about getting the hair off your face and the sun out of your eyes without looking like a “Mad Max” extra who’s wandered the Australian outback for 20-odd years.

Lush Fashion Lounge (14101 N.May; 936-0680) has a small but great selection of hats to keep the sensitive skin of your face from getting all sunspotty and droopy. (I look absolutely awful in hats, so I have to go the mega- SPF route instead.)

I loved the super-cute fedoras by The Hatter Company. The woven hats are lightweight and summery, done in a dark tan with a pretty floral band (think Laura Ingalls, not Tommy Bahama) around the crown’s base. For something a bit more tropical, check out the safari green fedora by Something Special done with an exotic floral band around the crown.

Lush also had a great floppy hat perfect for the pool or beach. It’s done in a light tan weave with a thin leather thong wrapped around the base of the crown and finished in an easy bow.

Downtown, Shop Good (3 N.W.Ninth; 702-0517) has great finds for snazzing up your head. And, a portion of everything you buy goes toward a good cause. The beneficiary nonprofit for the next year (which just started in July) is Sunbeam Family Services.

In the hat department, check out the unisex ball caps in a plain twill by Alternative Apparel or a vintage-looking Detroit Tigers cap from 47 Brand. My favorite, however, had to be the ’70s-style sweatbands by Toddland, complete with the hipsterific tagline, “Why waste time being athletic when you can just look athletic?” I also loved the crochet, tie-on headbands made right in OKC by the Spero Project (another nonprofit) and the way-too-cool Warby Parker sunglasses.

If you want lots of variety, head to Cloverleaf (2825 W. Wilshire; 840- 5556). I loved the adorable headbands and barrettes. Check out the stretchy headbands by Natural Life that add subtle bling hints and come in a ton of great colors and patterns, or the thicker, hippie-esque headbands (think embroidery and crochet details) by Alma Soul and Cupcakes & Cartwheels.

While I don’t have too many headbands, I do love a good barrette — especially in the summer. They’re perfect for holding hair away from my (way too dewy) face. Check out the Natural Life barrettes done in a floppy cloth flower or cute beaded bobby pins.

And then, there are the sunglasses.

Cloverleaf is an outrageous sunglass Mecca. I love the oversized plastic frames by A.J. Morgan — they’re fun without looking too costumey. But if you’re really going for it, you can’t miss the over-the-top glasses from Dr. Peeper. Glitter, cat-eyes and way more adorn these sunglasses. They’re so much fun and an undeniable ode to summer.

Now, I just have to work up the desire to leave the house.
