Flipping art

Longtime city restaurant Flip’s is known for food, wine and non-commission sales of featured artists.

There’s always something new at Flip’s Wine Bar & Trattoria, 5801 N. Western, and we’re not referring to the menu.

For about 20 years, since the restaurant’s inception, Flip’s walls have featured a different artist every six weeks. This month, it’s Melissa Key, who has been a professional photographer for 13 years.

After surviving Hurricane Katrina in 2005, she found everything paintworthy. Without water and electricity for several weeks, she painted. Her current exhibition highlights bright purples, greens and blues.

“There are quite a few artists that we have on a regular basis that have been here for years,” said Brianne Toledo, part-time manager. “That kind of art draws a large crowd.”

Patrons can purchase art on the walls at any time; she said, “We let the customers take the purchase when they leave.”

Flip’s charges no commission; the artist receives the full price of his or her piece.

Before Key’s work went up, the work of famed rock poster artist Nels “Jagmo” Jacobson was featured. Toledo remembers one downstairs of the band Delight.

“Posters like these are kind of a lost art, because now you can tweak them and Photoshop them,” she said. “Shows aren’t always promoted with posters anymore because of the Internet and social media. I remember posters plastered everywhere on Campus Corner in Norman.”
