Under there

Nikki Martin models P.J. Salvage at The Lingerie Store.

Jenny Coon Peterson August 31st, 2011

I’ve always kind of gone cheapo for swimsuits. No idea why, since I wear the hell out of them each summer and I (ahem) need things kept in place.

After my recent trip to the East Coast, however, I think I’m finally fully on board with spending a bit of dough on underthings. In this case, it was a bathing suit top (by Seafolly from LA Sun & Sport) with a price tag that made my husband choke.

But, you guys, the price was totally worth it. I spent almost an entire day swimming in a pretty strong surf, and save for getting completely taken out by one monster wave (and getting crazy sand burn, losing my sunglasses and momentarily flashing some mermaids), that sucker stayed in place.

Swim season may be almost over (tear), but good underthings (undies, bras, pajamas — you get the idea) are always needed.

You can’t beat The Lingerie Store (7636 N. Western; 841-9828) for a fantastic selection. The staff will help fit you in the best bra (look for names like Walcoal, DKNY, Betsey Johnson and La Mystere), and great options exist for all shapes and sizes, from the seamless T-shirt bra to lovely and lacy.

In the undies area, check out the lace underwear by Hanky Panky in a rainbow of colors and coverage.

I really loved the pajamas. Check out a matching tank and pj pant by Wild & Free in a deep purple with graphic elephants, or the classic pajama set by P.J. Salvage with illustrations of cats — yes, cats. My favorite had to be the adorable tap pants trimmed in lace with a matching tank by B Up. It comes in camel, black or cream.

At Isabella (1389 E. 15th; 359- 0777) in Edmond, the underthings are meant to peek out a bit. Take the diverse line by Free People called Intimately. It features lace bandeau-style bras in cool colors like mustard, tomato and eggplant (I must be hungry) or stretchy bandeaus in cool patterns. And don’t worry; they’re lined, so you won’t have to contend with a wardrobe malfunction.

Good underthings are always needed.

I also really liked the retro-sexy bra tops done in small floral prints — these would go well under sheer tops. Isabella also has thin cotton racer-back tanks by Splendid for going under tops and faded sweats (with matching sweatshirts) by Juicy Couture for lounging around the house.

In Northpark Mall, Kokopelli (12100 N. May; 748-5200) also carries P.J. Salvage pajamas (dogs, this time) and all the Spanx you can handle.

I really liked the “fake tanks” by Chickies. These attach to bra straps to cover up excessive cleavage and come in lots of great colors. Also check out the Coobie bras. A cross between a sports bra and a camisole, the Coobie bras fit lots of sizes and are perfect for lower-cut tops. Look for some great colors like wine, gray, red and blue.

And while you’re at Kokopelli, check out Sooo Lilly. The OKC cosmetic line is now based out of the shop.
