Four renowned storytellers will weave stories of wisdom and woe at the 31st annual Oklahoma City Storytelling Festival.
This local September ritual put on by the Arts Council of Oklahoma City has been happening since 1981, and will take place Friday and Saturday in a tent on the council’s campus, 400 W. California.
Renowned storytellers Donald Davis, Beth Horner, Bil Lepp and Onawumi Jean Moss have been invited from across the country to share tales they have experienced or heard throughout their lives. Each will perform for at least 15 minutes on both nights, while one will serve as the featured storyteller and spin yarns for 45 minutes.
“Donald Davis is supposedly the Holy Grail of storytellers,” said Emily Grober, communications director.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. shows are $15, with the content geared toward adults.
A reception before the Friday show will begin at 7 p.m. Kid-friendly stories will be told at a family matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday, where tickets are $3 for kids and $5 for adults. Two of the storytellers also will conduct a late-night session of ghost stories at 10:30 p.m. Friday.
“It is really a compelling event,” Grober said. “It’s like live theater, plus stand-up comedy, plus drama, plus a real, live movie. It’s such a cool event.”
