Ridin' the rails

Thomas the Tank Engine first appeared in books in 1946.

Carmen Forman September 20th, 2011

Thomas the Tank Engine will be chugging into Oklahoma City for the 16th year of the “Day Out with Thomas: Leader of the Track” tour.

The Okahoma Railway Museum’s event is based on the well-known star of the popular television series “Thomas & Friends.” Kids and their families can ride in a 15-ton replica of Thomas, and meet Sir Topham Hatt, controller of the railway.

“They love seeing Thomas and they love getting their picture taken with him,” the museum’s Anne Murray said.

Twenty-five-minute train rides will run Friday through Sunday for the next two weekends at the museum, 3400 N.E. Grand. Beginning at 9 a.m., Thomas departs every 50 minutes; the last train ride leaves the station at 4:30 p.m.

Tickets are assigned by time and passenger car. Event organizers recommend passengers arrive at least one hour before their scheduled departure times. In addition to the excitement of Thomas, kids can enjoy storytelling, videos, live music, arts and crafts, miniature golf and two moonwalks.

Passengers can choose to ride in luxury in an air-conditioned car, or choose a more au naturel approach in an open-air car.

Advance tickets are $16 for ages 2 and older, and $18 at the door. For tickets or more information, call 424-8222 or visit oklahomarailwaymuseum.org.
