But since he’s taking shots at a gay man for his belief that there isn’t a conflict between homosexuality and Christianity, I’ll tell you there are a whopping three passages in the New Testament that may address homosexuality. Specifically, Romans 1:26–27, 1 Corinthians 6:9–10 and 1 Timothy 1:8–11. I use the term “may” with good reason, since the New Testament was written in Greek and the word “homosexual” isn’t in the original text since the term didn’t exist prior to the 19th century.
The word Paul used in Timothy that was eventually translated to “homosexual” was “arsenokoitai,” which does not have a proper translation. I am not going to discuss the many possible interpretations of “arsenokoitai.” That would make me no better than those who tell people what the Bible says, as opposed to allowing them the benefit of religious self-discovery. However, I do hope that Frank researches it.
What I consider more important than these attempts at condemnation of homosexuals is the consistently ignored fact that Jesus Christ himself never addressed it. If the man whom you base your faith upon never speaks of such an issue, how then can all other possible references to homosexuality trump that?
Moreover, Jesus only issued two commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” And “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:36-40).
Now, call me crazy, but how can a Christian justify murder if they are loving their neighbor as themselves? Conversely, how can one be considered “loving your neighbor” if you’re busy berating them because they choose to live and worship differently than you?
Christ was a wise man; I just wish more people would pay attention to him.
