Storytime, kids!

Humpty Dumpty and other “eggs-citing” characters await kids at Storybook Forest.

Carmen Forman October 19th, 2011

Sunday, ongoing

Starting Sunday, Storybook Forest at Arcadia Lake allows kids to come face-to-face with their favorite storybook characters, instead of a machete-wielding murderer in a haunted house.

An alternative to potentially frightening pre-Halloween activities, Storybook Forest features Hansel and Gretel, Curious George and Clifford the Big Red Dog, among others. Children may wear costumes, as long as they’re not scary ones. A hayride and games also are part of the family fun.

“It has nothing to do with ghosts and goblins. It’s all based on classic storybooks and nursery rhymes,” said Nicole Offut, lake administrative assistant.

The walk through the forest started about 10 years ago. There used to be an adult trail called Agony at Arcadia, until Arcadia administrators decided to turn it into a kid-friendly event.

“Every 20 or 30 feet in the woods, there’ll be a different scene, and a scene will be anything from the Three Little Pigs, Snow White, Rapunzel, the Little Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe,” Offut said. There will be about 20 different scenes, where kids can receive treats.

Storybook Forest will be open from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. every night through Halloween, at Arcadia Lake’s Spring Creek Park, two and a half miles east of Interstate 35 and 15th Street in Edmond.

Admission for kids is $5 per child Mondays through Thursdays, and $7 per child Fridays through Sundays. Accompanying adults are admitted free.
