Fashionista 101

This local business owner and college freshman is majoring in a bright future.

While most college students are worrying about making it to class and not waking up in a field after a long night of partying, one University of Oklahoma freshman has different things on her mind.

While most college students are worrying about making it to class and not waking up in a field after a long night of partying, one University of Oklahoma freshman has different things on her mind.

As designer of her own collection of handbags and small accessories, Norman resident Faith Mouse is constantly brainstorming ideas for her company, Flaunt by Faith Nicole.

After going nationwide over the summer, Mouse’s creations are sold in more than 500 locations, including recently added Aruba and Hawaii.

“Well, I’ve always loved fashion. It was always my favorite thing, even as a little girl,” Mouse (pictured) said.

Mouse started designing her own line of bags and giftware at 16, then pitched the idea of creating her own fashion line to her parents.

Mouse and her parents took the line to shows in Dallas and Atlanta, where it proved to be successful. Boutique and gift-shop owners came to the shows and ordered products they liked.

“I think eventually the plan is to create my own store, maybe in New York or Vegas or something, but right now I’m sticking with mainly selling directly to the stores and not having my own,” Mouse said.

Mouse is taking 17 credit hours this semester and hopes to be admitted into the Price College of Business to study international business. She said she wants to get a business degree instead of going to design school so she can learn the financial aspects of her company.

Because of her hefty course load, Mouse doesn’t get to spend as much time at the Flaunt office as she used to, and her mom has stepped up in her absence.

“School is super important to me,” Mouse said. “If I don’t get good grades and succeed, then the company is never going to go anywhere.”

Mouse continues to do all of the designing for Flaunt and already has the spring collection planned out. She's also begun working on the fall 2012 collection. Mouse also is working on a collegiate collection that reflects her experience at OU, and loves seeing people with her bags.

“I was at the OU game and I saw five Flaunt bags,” Mouse said. “That’s the most exciting thing! I want to go up to them and be like, 'I designed that!' But I don’t.”

The young designer gets most of her ideas from reading Vogue, Elle and Glamour.  “I love to read magazines and look at the trends, but what I also like to do is take from my own personal style,” Mouse said.

Once she graduates, Mouse hopes to expand her company into a full line of clothes, jewelry and cosmetics.

The entrepreneur kept her company quiet when in high school, but now she can’t avoid the topic.

“I don’t really say, 'Hi, my name is Faith Mouse. I own a company.' But, you know it kind of comes up in every conversation now because it such a huge part of my life.”
