So, how did a dapper savant like myself decide to visit the dandy side of things? It began with a national nod from esteemed Esquire magazine listing Oklahoma City’s own Mr. Ooley’s (1901 Northwest Expressway in Penn Square Mall; 879-0888) on its “A-list” of men’s specialty stores.
Out of more than 90 stores listed nationwide — including fashion hubs in New York City, Chicago and Dallas — OKC was represented.

Turns out Esquire knew what it was talking about. Co-owner Sara Ooley Davis walked me through what any man would experience if suit-shopping. First, she explained, the specific needs of each client are assessed, then factors like frequency of wear and lifestyle of the customer are taken into account. After that, an overall measurement is taken to establish a base size.

“Italian lines are sized in metric, so if you’re in between, go with Italian,” said Davis.
She then discussed the details that come after a suit is selected. The store has five full-time tailors, so your brand-new wardrobe investment will be handled in-house and ready for you promptly. Also, repairs for the life of the suit are included with purchase.
In addition, the store has anything you might need, from bow ties to shoes, and in a variety of colors and patterns.
Spencer Stone (6492 Avondale; 608-0586) may not be on Esquire’s list (yet), but it boasts a man cave toward the back called The Lab, where you’ll find a clever, burly blend of vintage, new and handmade items.
You won’t find a room full of suits in The Lab — it’s more for casual menswear needs like shirts, jackets, jeans, sweaters and everyday shoes — but you can always return to the front to be greeted with a wealth of suit accouterments.
Whether you’re going dressy or casual, you’d be remiss if you didn’t check out the selection of hats to complete your new look.
While you’re in the area, pop over to the newly opened second location of S.J. Haggard & Co. (6436 Avondale; 843-9200). From high-end suits and ties to work-wear apparel, this shop has you covered. Friend it on Facebook and Twitter for frequent inventory updates, as well as sales.
Building up a formal and professional wardrobe can be an expensive endeavor, but this city offers the highest quality products, coupled with the most stellar local services.
Whether you’re shopping for the guy in your life or you are a fella in need of your first suit, you’re covered. Let’s shop, OKC!
