Dancing with the Bronchos
On Friday, support University of Central Oklahoma athletes with a dinner, auction and plenty of reasons to dance from 5:30 to 11 p.m. at Hamilton Field House, 100 N. University Drive in Edmond.

The night will include a cash bar, ballroom dance lessons, as well as a dance contest among the UCO athletes beginning at 9:15 p.m. Tickets are $50 a person or $500 for a table, complete with wine, that seats eight to 10. Still not in your budget, but you want to help? Tickets are $10 after 8:30 p.m, and all proceeds go to fund UCO athletes. Call 974-2500 to reserve your tickets.

Melt into me
Get in the mood with some fondue and a book of redeemable romance coupons this Valentine’s Day. The Melting Pot, 4 E. Sheridan, is helping out those last-minute lovers with a little incentive with “10 Days of Romance,” now through Feb. 19. Any couple that dines in will receive the complimentary book of romance coupons like “exclusive use of the TV remote” and “Take me back to The Melting Pot.”

Two packages designed specifically for Tuesday include four-course specials ranging from loaded baked potato Cheddar cheese fondue to Caribbean-style fondue broth. One package even includes a carriage ride. Make your reservation at 235-1000.

Happy Together
For your sweetie and you, there will be a banquet-style dinner this Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Oklahoma City Community College. Dinner entertainment will be provided by the Silver Strings of Putnam City High School.

On the menu will be chicken capri, London broil or eggplant stuffed with vegetables.

A concert at 7:30 p.m. will feature American flamenco guitarist Ron Radford in the Bruce Owen Theater. Dessert will be served in the lobby of the theater prior to the concert.

Dinner and the concert will be $40 per person; $35 for faculty and staff; and $10 for OCCC students with identification. A concert-only option is also available.

I saw the sign
Actually, at Ranch House Cafe at 5000 N.W. 10th, you won’t.

After some bad sign business, the establishment only has a banner to identify itself to its patrons. Don’t be fooled; they’re open! And if you see someone running around with a sign reading “Ranch House Cafe,” ask them if they’d kindly return it.

Sage advice
Sage Cafe, 228 N.E. Second, in the heart of the Deep Deuce historic jazz district, is temporarily closed for a remodel. It’s known for its good truffle mac and cheese and other tasty dishes. Let’s hope it re-opens soon.

Chow chat
Melanie “Mel” Chesser is the sole owner/manager of Vin Dolce, a wine bar at 16 S. Broadway in Edmond that has been open for a mere 12 weeks. Chesser, born in Oklahoma City, was a Realtor for 19 years.

Husband: “Charles Jacob.” Capacity: “We have 68 seats but can have private parties for up to 120.”

Best-sellers: “The Cabernet Sauvignons are the best, and now we are offering wine flights. We have 65 [wines] by the glass and 115 by the bottle.”

Trickiest part of opening a business: “Pulling the kitchen together. We went to time-consuming auctions, but you get things for pennies on the dollar.”

Head chef: “Son Justin Berry, 22, who is self-taught and whose crab cakes are best-sellers. Also son Ryan Berry, 19, the pastry chef who just finished his apprenticeship at Breckenridge in Vail.”

Talent: “I paint abstracts.” Favorite food: “I tend to live on cheese.”

Best advice: “Don’t take yourself so seriously.”

Splurge on: “Comfort food such as Nomad’s pizza and a good mushroom and Swiss cheeseburger.”

Essential kitchen equipment: “A good, sharp knife.”

Been to the California wine valley: “Three times and Michael Keenan fixed us lunch.”

A funny happening at the wine bar: “One lady took off her dirty socks and left them on a table. Another night, two ladies came in, sat in the lounge and ordered water all evening. Nothing else! And left no tips. It was bizarre!”
