Now in its 23rd year, the annual Oklahoma Student Inventors Exposition, aka the Invention Convention, will be from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Rose State College Communication Center, 6420 S.E. 15th in Midwest City.

Each year, the event is presented by inventor Julian Taylor, who holds more than 100 patented inventions, and former elementary teacher Betty Wright. From entries created by students from kindergarten through grade 12, winners are determined by a panel of more than 30 judges, including volunteers from Tinker Air Force Base and patent officers.

“I think it’s a chance for kids in the state to show how creative they are,” said Wright, “and how good they are at solving problems.”

Entries are divided into five groups, in which places first through fifth will be awarded. Overall, there is one grand-prize winner, two division winners and a wackiest invention winner.

“The judges look for anything that is marketable and takes care of a need,” said Wright.

Putnam City North’s barbershop quartet and singer Frenchesca Thomas will perform at the event, while Taylor will create an invention out of simple objects. Admission is free.
