Library to celebrate squirrels with day of fun

Gazette staff January 17th, 2008

Something squirrelly is going on at Southern Oaks Public Library " namely, observance of Squirrel Appreciation Day.

An unofficial holiday started in 2001, the day falls on Jan. 21 of every year, but Southern Oaks will hold its event from 2-4 p.m. Saturday.

According to John Hilbert, young adult services librarian, the idea for the event started with his teen advisory board.
"They came up with it and they got behind it," Hilbert said. "I think they were trying to get on my nerves, but it was a cute idea."

Several squirrel-related activities are planned, including making plush stuffed-animal squirrels and maybe even squirrel feeders. Cartoons will be screened, like "Rocky and Bullwinkle."

The special guest will be Linda Luna, who performs squirrel behavioral research at the University of Central Oklahoma. Hilbert said he lucked into finding a squirrel expert on the first phone call he made.

"Squirrels kind of have a bad name," he said. "A lot of people don't even like squirrels! There's a lot of bad press about squirrels doing bad things, like causing power outages. But they have a lot of positive things, too, and that's what (Luna) will talk about."

Hilbert said the program is recommended is for ages 10 and up. Southern Oaks is located at 6900 S. Walker. For more information, call 631-4468 or visit their site.
