IndianGiver — Plafond EP

If you were to peruse the “About” section of IndianGiver’s Facebook page, you’ll notice how the instruments attributed to each of the Oklahoma City band’s five members are described with downright flippancy: Dylan Jordan plays “sticks & animal skins,” while Jazzton Rodriguez earns his keep with “shanties & loud noises,” and so on.

Various artists — Never Give Up: Celebrating 10 Years of The Postal Service

Few indie bands have had the impact on current music that The Postal Service has. Even fewer have done so with only one album.

Big Worm — Bench All-Stars

Fans of the comedy classic Friday may recognize the name Big Worm, but the Big Worm behind Bench All-Stars is rooted not in South Central L.A., but on the streets of Oklahoma City.

Code 22 — Going Soft: The Acoustic Album!

The guys of Oklahoma City’s Code 22 seem like a likable group of fellas. Their latest release, Going Soft: The Acoustic Album!, is likable enough as well — so likable that on first listen, I took its clean, acoustic sound and clear, unstressed vocals as an alternative praise-and-worship band.

Eureeka — Polysynthetic Fields

It’s always refreshing to hear music that embraces its own eccentricity, yet presents it in an accessible and meek fashion. Eureeka — the Norman-based duo of Jordan Vargas and Devin Wahl — has tapped into this rarified air on its self-released EP, Polysynthetic Fields.

OMG, it's an OBN night!

Joshua Boydston June 6th, 2012

OBN IIIs and Shitty/Awesome
10 p.m. Saturday
Blue Note Lounge
2408 N. Robinson

Austin, Texas-based garage musician Orville Bateman Neely stays busy. He produces records for the likes of The Strange Boys, drums for A Giant Dog, co-fronts Bad Sports and runs sound at Austin venue Beerland.

Oh, and currently on its first national tour, his own band, OBN IIIs, plays 10 p.m. Saturday at The Blue Note Lounge.

With raucous melodies, high energy and tracks like “Communicated to Death” and “If the Shit Fits” — both from last year’s album, The One and Only — the crowd is all but guaranteed a crazy good time.

Opening the show is Shitty/Awesome. The Norman band is the subject of the rockumentary short The Shittiest Movie Ever Made, which premieres at 9 p.m. one night before at The Exchange, 700 W. Sheridan, as a part of the deadCENTER Film Festival.

From local filmmaker Nathan Poppe, Shittiest Movie chronicles the release show for S/A’s self-titled debut record last August — and the emerging garage-punk scene at large — in what promises to be the loudest entry of the festival. The trailer alone is chock-full of fireworks, beer showers, men’s underwear, guitars and partial nudity.

For more information on OBN IIIs, call 600-1166. For more information on The Shittiest Movie Ever Made, call 246-9233 or visit deadcenterfilm.org.
