Off the campaign trail

Gazette staff August 1st, 2012

You know your candidacy for political office has hit a snag when you end up in a jail cell unable to make bail. That’s the conundrum facing Fred E. Ray Smith, a Republican running against Sen.Susan Paddack (D-Ada) in state Senate District 13.

The 28-year-old Smith was arrested by Pontotoc County sheriff’s deputies on two warrants stemming from his owing nearly $3,000 in back child support and $1,850 in driving-related municipal fines.

Smith’s campaign manager — who also happens to be his fiancée — and apparent Quentin Tarantino movie character SunShine Fox told The Oklahoman that Smith was still sitting in jail as of July 24 because all their money had gone to the campaign.

Unfortunately, because Smith was being provided three meals a day along with room, board and clothing by the nanny state, he missed a scheduled appearance with the Konawa Tea Party, according to The Oklahoman.
