Library to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday

One of America's most beloved children's authors and illustrators, Dr. Seuss, is having a birthday extravaganza thrown in his honor.

"Seussical Saturday" will be held 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday at Southern Oaks Library, 6900 S. Walker, to pay tribute to the man behind such timeless staples in kid-lit as:
" "The Cat in the Hat,"
" "Green Eggs and Ham,"
" "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and
" "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish."

Cheryll Smith, children's services librarian, said the event is a fun way to celebrate Dr. Seuss' life in an enjoyable, interactive way.

"We'll have some of his classic books set out, an arts and crafts table, face-painting and hopefully a birthday cake for the guest of honor," she said. "The kids will also get to participate in a mooing contest, inspired by Dr. Seuss' book 'Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?' This should be entertaining!"

LEGACY
Born in 1904 in Springfield, Mass., Theodor Seuss Geisel is recognized for his magical rhyming text and whimsical creatures, having penned 44 children books over the course of his career, until his death in 1991. Several of his stories have been adapted into animated programs and big-budget films.

While Seuss' actual birthday may be Sunday, Seussical Saturday should be an amusing early present for fans of all ages. Children are encouraged " but not required " to come dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss character.
