Eager to show her support in his fight, Martin decided to do what she does best — hairstyling — to raise money for the cause. The idea for a fashion hair show was born.
She and Starlite Salon partnered with SkyyBar UltraLounge, the American Cancer Society and local artist Nicole Moan to create Friday’s fundraising event, La Creation de Fantasmes.
“We all know someone or have a friend who knows someone that has been affected by cancer,” said Martin.
Martin and more than a dozen hairstylists will create wild, out-of-this-world looks with hairpieces and extensions. Models were recruited from the stylists’ friends and clients, including Martin’s sister-in-law. They will be dressed in Moan’s ceramic corsets.
“There will be a lot of color block ing, and each model will be very different and unique,” Martin said. Proceeds from La Creation de Fantasmes will be donated as restricted gifts, meaning that the money stays in Oklahoma. The funds will go to the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery, a program that provides medical transportation to people in treatment for cancer.
For one dollar per ticket, patrons can participate in a raffle featuring prizes donated by local businesses, including a gift certificate to No Regrets Tattoo, a massage at the Oklahoma Therapy Institute and an extension service by Martin herself. Discount coupons for Starlite will be handed out by the models after the show.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun and we’re keeping things local,” said Martin. “Let’s do something good.”
