Spice of life

Greg Horton September 19th, 2012

A recently opened store in Oklahoma City hopes to spice things up, literally.

The Savory Spice Shop, 4400 N. Western, sells more than 400 herbs, spices and hand-blended seasonings.

“It breaks down to 250 individual herbs and spices, and 150 proprietary seasoning blends,” said owner Able Blakley. “We have something for everyone and every kind of dish.”

This marks the 18th franchise in the Savory Spice Shop concept. The flagship store is in Denver.

“We greet customers and give them a brief overview of the store — sections, blends, herbs, all the things they need to know to find what they are looking for — and then we let them taste and smell while they shop,” Blakley said.

Another customer-friendly quality is the variety of available quantities. Products can be purchased in sizes as small as a half-ounce.

“How many times are you going to use Persian saffron?” Blakley said. “Chances are you will only need a teaspoon of it, so we sell in small quantities to make it more convenient. We like to say, ‘Taste what you want; buy what you need.’” He said he chose the location adjacent to Will Rogers Theater because of Western Avenue’s feel.

“I loved the atmosphere, our neighbors, the history of the street,” he said. “It reminds me of the Old South Pearl section of Denver.”

Savory Spice Shop is open daily. Hours are posted online at savoryspiceshop.com, and on its Facebook page.
