The marrying kind

Gazette staff February 12th, 2013

People have been getting hitched for centuries. You know the drill: The bride and groom recite vows, sign a contract and voilà! But that’s just not enough for state Sen. Josh Brecheen, R-Coalgate, whose Senate Bill 105 seeks to make “covenant marriage” a legally recognized option.

Brecheen apparently has had it up to here with couples in Oklahoma — which the U.S. Census Bureau reports has the country’s highest divorce rate — not taking marriage seriously.

“Love is a choice,” he said. (It’s also patient, kind and not jealous, we hear.) “You don’t fall in and out of it accidentally.”

His proposal would make divorce more labor-intensive for couples in a covenant marriage. They would have to undergo counseling before marriage or divorce as well as a “cooling-off” period up to two years before splitsville. Covenant marriages currently are available in Louisiana, Arkansas and Arizona.

SB 105 was approved unanimously by the Senate Judiciary Committee and now goes before the entire Senate for consideration.
