UCO volunteers reach out to the metro with the aptly named Big Event.

Alyssa Grimley March 6th, 2013

University of Central Oklahoma students, faculty and staff will flood the streets Saturday in search of good deeds that need doing, for what’s being labeled the annual Big Event.

Volunteers will celebrate Community Service Day and extend their services to any metro resident.

“The main mission is to say ‘thank you’ to the community,” said Rachel Winters, program coordinator. “We looked into that mission and decided to shift it to the citizens as well as the local establishments.”

While volunteer positions are open only to UCO students, faculty and staff, anyone in the community was eligible to be a work site. A few of the entities where volunteers will help include the Edmond Hope Center, the local YMCA, Free to Live Animal Sanctuary, Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and the Redbud Classic.

For Joel Richardson, Big Event chair-elect and junior at UCO, Big Event was a chance to personally thank the community for help he has received in the past.

“When I started at UCO, my family was on hard times and depended a lot on volunteer work to help us get back on our feet,” he said. “I thought this would be a good opportunity to give back to families in need.”

Winters said the university will continue to reach out to the community for future Big Events. “We’re always looking to increase the number of people we can help,” she said.
