With Earth Day being Monday, Oklahoma City’s Martin Park Nature Center will host its annual Earth Fest. Free and open to the public, the special day features a variety of speakers and exhibits focusing on conservation.

Among the booths at the event will be one specifically about water conservation, a critical subject in the wake of Oklahoma’s ongoing drought. Justin Moss, a professor of horticulture at Oklahoma State University, helped develop the display. He said he wants to spread the message that April showers don’t mean that Oklahomans have water to waste.

The booth will include crafts and activities for kids — including a board game and environmentally conscious coloring pages — to learn about the importance of saving water. Moss said visitors to the booth can get door hangers with tips for saving water and toilet dye tablets that can show if a toilet is leaking.

“We want to reach as many people as possible,” Moss said.

He compared conserving water to managing a savings account and said water-saving practices should be part of our overall lifestyle.

“If we save water during the good times, we’ll have water during the bad times,” Moss said.
