Litter be gone

Rachael Cervenka April 17th, 2013

Litterbugs, beware!

A local nonprofit is working to rid the streets of garbage in an effort to keep Oklahoma City spotless.

With springtime here and more people venturing outdoors. OKC Beautiful has engineered LitterBlitz, a monthlong campaign encouraging anyone and everyone to simply pick up trash.

Since 2001, the grassroots movement has been influential in cleaning up the metro area, and it continues to grow each April.

Last year alone, nearly 11,000 volunteers picked up 5,253 bags containing 157,590 pounds of trash, according to the organization.

So far this year, more than 100 teams of varying size have already signed up to help beautify public outdoor spaces, said Kasey Steffen, OKC Beautiful’s marketing and events manager.

“It’s a nice, constant reminder that there are all these people from different nooks and crannies who care about the city,” she said.

OKC Beautiful, with help from their sponsors and partners, provides LitterBlitz volunteers with care packages of trash bags, gloves, bottled water and anything else they might need for the cleanup.

The organization aims to be a catalyst for individuals and groups wanting to improve the city’s aesthetic appearance.

Throughout April, OKC Beautiful will be part of at a number of events educating and promoting litter pickup and recycling.
