If you’re the type who’s been waitin’ all day for Faith Hill to ring in Sunday Night Football on NBC, well, come this fall, you’ll be waitin’ all day for Carrie Underwood to do so. The 30-year-old Checotah native will replace Hill as singer of the prime-time NFL showcase’s (regrettably) catchy theme song.

“I am thrilled to be a part of NBC’s Sunday Night Football and am so honored they asked me,” Underwood said via news release. “I have always loved football season, and it is so exciting to now become part of it every Sunday night!”

Underwood, a candidate for the gig back when Hill was selected in 2006, long has been associated with sporting events in some fashion.

In addition to marrying a pro hockey player (Mike Fisher of the Nashville Predators) and singing the national anthem at the 2010 Super Bowl, she had a well-documented relationship with Tony Romo, whose Dallas Cow- boys will appear on the program — fittingly — in their first game of the season in what is likely to be a big distraction for the easily flustered quarterback.

But this new role marks a new level of sports stardom for the country music megastar. Nielson ratings show SNF was America’s most-watched television broadcast during the 2011-12 season, just edging out American Idol — the show on which Underwood launched her career eight years ago.
