If there’s one thing we Oklahomans take pride in — at least now that the Thunder season’s over — it’s our football. Arguably the most prideful of all is University of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who’s never shied from an opportunity to boast about the prestigious nature of both his program and its Big 12 conference.

Stoops and his pride made waves recently in an interview during a Sooner Caravan stop in Tulsa, when he admirably (if not futilely) defended his conference against the big, bad SEC — winner of seven consecutive BCS national championships.

“So they’ve had the best team in college football,” he said. “They haven’t had the whole conference. Because, again, half of ’em haven’t done much at all.”

The man does have a point, yet the rest of college football nation shan’t ever question the SEC’s media-anointed superiority.

Unless, of course, you live in Oklahoma.

A recent poll asked, “Which conference is stronger overall in football?” The overwhelming majority — 83 percent, in fact — said the SEC.

When broken down by state, 49 of 50 agreed.

The one exception? None other than the Sooner State itself. Fifty-three percent of Oklahomans echoed the sentiments of their patron saint and all-around thinker, free- Stoops.
