What, me bothered?

Gazette staff June 12th, 2013

Just days before winning the Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Award — an honor reserved for those who “excel in their sport and who show by their actions a desire to help others” — Adrian Peterson announced he is “not with” same-sex marriage.

The issue arose last month on a Sirius/XM radio program, when the Minnesota Vikings running back and former University of Oklahoma All-American was asked about former teammate Chris Kluwe, an outspoken gay rights advocate.

“I have relatives who are gay. I’m not biased toward them. I still treat them the same. I love ’em,” Peterson said. “But again, I’m not with that. That’s not something I believe in. But to each his own.”

Translation: He treats them the same; he just thinks they should be treated differently. Got it?

In a separate interview with The Oklahoman, when asked whether he’d be content with a gay teammate, the NFL’s reigning MVP said it “really wouldn’t bother me that much.”

Except, you know, that whole shower thing.

“Simple things, as far as showers and things like that, you know, of course, anyone would be uncomfortable,” he said.

“But you know, I’m a grown man. There’s things that I can deal with. I’m comfortable in my skin.”

So comfortable, in fact, that he would treat them as he would any other heterosexual teammate.

“I’ll still high-five them. Pat them on the butt when he’s doing good, and go on about my business.”

Thanks for clearing that up, AD.
