Oh, hair, no!

Gazette staff June 12th, 2013

We’ll say this for U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn: No amount of government spending is too modest for him to oppose. The Muskogee Republican recently has taken his crusade against federal largesse to his Coburn’s hostility for the colleagues on Capitol Hill.

In a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Major- ity Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., Coburn called for curtailing transportation perks for lawmakers and their staff as well as various programs offered by the Senate and House learning centers. A number of those classes, he contends, range from spring cleaning to the importance of a good night’s sleep.

Moreover, Coburn called for shuttering the Senate hair salon and barbershop, which for decades have been coifing the comb-over of many a member.

The shops reportedly have lost more than $300,000 annually since 1997 — perhaps the inevitable result of a place where the chief clientele get thinning hair — but have stayed afloat with the help of Senate subsidies.

Chicken-Fried News can’t help but wonder if Coburn’s hostility for the hair salon might be why he periodically prefers beards that venture into lumberjack territory.
