Members of AIDS Walk of Oklahoma City Inc. initiated the new event to supplement their preparations for their annual downtown 5K race and donations to nonprofits that provide HIV/AIDS care, support and education.
“We want to expand the demographic, make this a fun and affordable event, while keeping it high-end, in an effort to allow all people to feel like they’re making a difference,” said event chair James Siderias.
Ninety percent of funds raised from the party will return to the community. The organization has distributed more than $635,000 to the local HIV/AIDS community since 1998, Siderias said.
Oklahoma City had nearly 3,000 citizens diagnosed with AIDS in 2011, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“So many higher-end events that cater to bringing awareness to HIV/ AIDS require a significant contribution, and oftentimes, those individuals our work is benefitting can’t even afford the tickets,” Siderias said.
RED is attempting to mix that up by offering tickets starting at $10. They can be purchased at the door or guests can RSVP to Siderias, Scott Hines or Lisa Pitsiri at redpartyokc@ gmail.com.
