Artisans of a midtown bakery will participate in their first international open house Saturday with hourly bread and pastry demonstrations, as well as free tastings.

As a member of the Bread Bakers Guild of America, Prairie Thunder Baking Company, 1114 Classen Drive, invites audiences to see how its bread is made from simple baguette dough into the products they purchase every day.

“It’s a chance to connect with our community and our customers and hopefully satisfy curiosity they have about how their bread gets from raw ingredients to the table,” said bakery owner John McBryde.

Visitors are welcome to watch the demonstrations — five to six are planned — either near the kitchen or in the pastry area, and all are encouraged to dine in throughout the special day.

Guests can also partake in free refreshments, cookies and other small treats, McBryde said.

He noted that the event is not intended to be instructional for people to duplicate at home, but rather to see how the bakers craft the oven-baked delights on a daily basis.

“We do it the old-fashioned, oldschool way,” McBryde said.

The Bread Bakers Guild of America has held three open houses this year, with more than 50 bakeries in 29 states and one Canadian province participating. Prairie Thunder has been a member of the Sonoma, Calif.- based organization since 2008, the same year it opened its doors as one of Oklahoma City’s few artisan bakeries.

Prairie Thunder is the only Oklahoma participant in Saturday’s open house.
