Truth-telling TV

Gazette staff July 9th, 2013

Usually, it seems as if Oklahomans are featured on national television for one of three reasons: weather, methamphetamine and basketball.

But a rage-filled Oklahoma City man happened across a fourth reason during a July 1 appearance on Dr. Phil: domestic abuse.

The episode, which first aired in May, revealed 25-year-old Timothy D. Cruz admitting to punching, kicking and strangling his Edmond girlfriend, Brittany Roberts.

Oklahoma County prosecutors already had been building a case against Cruz for assaulting Roberts over a two-year period. Cruz is charged with seven counts of domestic abuse, including two by strangulation.

If you didn’t think this situation (or Dr. Phil) could get any worse, well, a child is involved. The state Department of Human Services took the couple’s 6-month-old daughter because Cruz had admitted to attacking Roberts while she was holding the child.

Roberts told Dr. Phil McGraw, himself an Oklahoma native, she is considering marrying Cruz despite his “evil, abusive and unfaithful” ways.
