According to news accounts, the Rottweiler pup was in a van with the windows rolled down. Still, Switzer felt sorry for the animal. He plucked the canine from the car, tracked down the owners and purchased the dog from them on the spot.
Switzer took the pup, which he named Stella, to a vet for a complete checkup before eventually finding a good home for her.
The rescue impressed People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which honored the coach with an award and a plate of vegan cookies.
"Stella has found a loving home, and it all started with a very tough coach who makes no bones about having a soft spot for animals," said Tracy Reiman, PETA executive vice president.
Presumably, Switzer didn't stuff the vegan cookies in the pockets of his favorite mink fur coat.
