Vietnamese comfort food

I’ve always had a love affair with the refreshing, healthy cuisine of Vietnam. I love the fragrances, the fresh herbs, cilantro, basil, mint and other Asian herbs: perilla, Vietnamese coriander and sawtooth cilantro. And I love the contrast and balance in almost every dish: spicy vs. cool, salty vs. sweet and steamed vs. crispy.

If you are craving maple bacon donuts, get to the stop early on Mondays; they sell out fast. Also, the jalapeño cheese rolls are great.

Located on the corner of Western Avenue and Hefner Road, this shop carries the usual chocolate-glazed Long John (.69 each) and yeasty doughnut holes ($1.30 dozen), but it’s not just the traditional delectables that bring customers into the store.

In a world of Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts, The Daily Donut has made its mark on Oklahoma City by offering specialty delights with which no chain store can compete.

The Daily’s owners take its inspiration from the famous Voodoo Doughnut shop in Portland, Ore., they said.

Ever tried an Oreo doughnut ($1.29)?

What about a red velvet doughnut ($1.29) with cream cheese frosting?

Each day, a specialty flavor is offered, but Mondays get all the attention.

You see, that’s when patrons can try its bacon doughnut ($1.59 each).

Yes, bacon. On a doughnut. A light, airy yeast doughnut topped with maple or chocolate glaze and generously sprinkled with the world’s most perfect food: bacon. (OK, maybe not the world’s most perfect food, but it might be mine.)

The maple glaze is crunchy, delicate, sweet and salty all rolled into one, and it is divine. It’s reminiscent of when your mom made pancakes and bacon for breakfast and you would dip your bacon in the maple syrup.

Ever tried an Oreo doughnut?
Speaking of sweet, The Daily also sells confectioneries topped with Oreo cookies, M&M candies and Fruity Pebbles cereal. Prefer a filled doughnut?

Friday’s special is Key Lime Pie ($1.59) — a yeast doughnut filled with a tangy, sweet custard. But if you’re like me and a good ol’ twist or blueberry cake doughnut are more your style, The Daily Donut has that, too.

The crumbly cake doughnuts (.75 each) come in original, blueberry and chocolate and are moist and flavorful.

Sausage rolls ($1.89) are also offered in cheese or jalapeño. (Go for the jalapeño. They aren’t overly spicy, and are a perfect combination with the sweet, flakey roll that surrounds the sausage.)

Fresh-brewed coffee and cappuccino also are available. A combo (a glazed or chocolate doughnut and a cup of coffee) costs $1.49.

The Daily Donut is open 5 a.m.- noon Monday-Friday and 5 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
