Fashion fun

Shop your little local heart out.

Jenn Scott September 11th, 2013

The fashion buzz was louder last week.

Since Sept. 5, New York has been packed with BCBGMAXAZRIA, Zac Posen, Zang Toi and Betsey Johnson fans, all vying for a glimpse of upcoming, specially tailored garments.

It’s one of my favorite months for many reasons that have nothing to do with fashion.

There is a hope in the air that temps will dip, and pumpkin-flavored and -scented everything begins to manifest.

If you are involved with the fashion industry in any capacity, then it’s a worldwide celebration of designers who showcase upcoming 2014 collections. It all starts in New York and then hops to London, Milan and Paris.

Now, I’ve never quite worked out why we’ve just now nearly made it to cooler days and spring collections are popping up, but I don’t make the rules.

Not everyone is able to jet away to New York or Milan and cozy up with fashion royalty. Not everyone is ready to start thinking about spring and summer wardrobes, either. But that doesn’t mean the intention behind seasonal buzz can’t be celebrated.

A new season means a fresh, new perspective, and that can be celebrated in all areas of life.

Thursday from 6-8 p.m., Penn Square Mall (1901 Northwest Expressway; 841-2696), opens its doors and hallways to a slew of women in its Girl’s Night Out. It’s Oklahoma City’s version of September’s Fashion Week festivities.

The event is packed with glamorous fashion-y fun, kicked off by a runway show displaying clothing and accessories from participating retailers in the mall. All looks worn by the models will be available for purchase, as well.

Discounts will be offered on some of the upcoming fall looks, and representatives of retail teams will be on hand to offer consultation about fitting or putting together outfits.

Girl’s Night Out provides drinks and food, catered by In the Raw Sushi (200 S. Oklahoma Ave.; 702-1325). Expect an array of rolls, and top-selling appetizers and fried rice.

A cash bar will be available for guests who are 21 and up, and In the Raw will offer a complimentary drink called the Redefined Cosmo, made with cherry vodka, white cranberry juice and a splash of lime.

The treats don’t stop there. The first 250 guests receive a coveted swag bag. The tote comes full of beauty products and exclusive offers from stores located in the mall. Along with the runway show, OKC Improv will perform, so plan to be thoroughly entertained.

Who needs New York and silly fashion rules when you’ve got a local, fall-friendly night of fun? Let’s shop, OKC!

Unfortunately, this event wasn't nearly as exciting as this article made it out to be. I had high expectations, just as the one who wrote this did, but the event fell short in a major way. I wrote a recap of it here:

By the way, spring clothes are debuted during fall fashion weeks because it gives labels and retailers time to prepare for the spring season, as they have to place their orders well in advance.
