Downtown library hosts film events

Gazette staff May 22nd, 2008

In honor of movie adaptations of comic books and with a nod to May 3's highly successful Free Comic Book Day, the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library will show "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" at 6 p.m. Wednesday and "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" at the same time on May 28

"Rise," released last summer, is the sequel to 2005's hit "Fantastic Four," while 2003's "Gentlemen" features Sean Connery in a story imagining literary characters like The Invisible Man and Dr. Jekyll as Victorian-era superheroes.

Kim Edwards, a young-adult librarian and avid comic book collector, said the movies aren't necessarily of Shakespearean caliber, but are a celebration of the comic-book film genre.

"The purpose of these movies (is) so people can know that they're out there," she said. "Last night, we showed 'Hellboy,' and not everyone there knew it was based on a comic book. "¦ They're going to be a lot of fun."

In addition to these showings, movie nights will be hosted at 6 p.m. every Wednesday at the Downtown Library, 300 Park Ave. For information on showtimes or directions, call the library at 606-3876.
