Edmond outdoor venue hosts 'Footloose'

Footloose

It's time for the whole family to cut loose and celebrate Summerstock Productions' fourth season with its opening production, "Footloose."

Outdoors at Mitch Park Amphitheatre, 2733 Marilyn Williams in Edmond, the production company is showcasing "Footloose," the musical adapted from the 1984 movie, itself based on a true story of repression and teen rebellion in a small Oklahoma town. Featuring student performers from the University of Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma City University, this year's cast boasts high-profile members from the community, including former Edmond Mayor Saundra Naifeh.

Staying true to its family-oriented nature, Summerstock Productions gives its first show of the season a PG rating.

"Broadway musicals appeal to a wide age range, so when Grandma and Grandpa come with the family, they are equally entertained as the little children that come," said Theresa Nelson, vice president of Summerstock's board of directors.

The outdoor amphitheater environment allows for more than just entertaining the audience, she said.

"When you have kids who are going to be dancing, they'll come down the aisles through the audience," Nelson said. "Incorporating that outdoor environment makes you feel more part of the experience, instead of a witness of it."

"Footloose" kicks off at 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and June 12-14. Tickets at the gate are $12 for adults, $6 for students and free for children under 4. Remember to bring lawn chairs and blankets for the tiered outdoor seating. For more information, call 249-7477.
