Take a trip through Willy Wonka's infamous chocolate factory by experiencing The Sooner Theatre's SummerStage production of "Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka Jr."
Adapted into a musical with songs from the original 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," this version of the 1964 children's book tells the story of the beloved candy man and his search for an heir to his chocolate empire.
Rehearsals for "Willy Wonka Jr." began June 2. Since then, the 69 cast members from Norman, Moore, Oklahoma City and Wayne, ranging in age from 8 to 13, have been learning everything there is to know about putting on a musical in 18 days, according to Jennifer Heavner Baker, Sooner Theatre executive director.
"This is the largest cast we've ever worked with in the summer," Baker said, in a press release. "We have a lot of work to do and the kids take it seriously, but they still have tons of fun, make strong friendships and create great memories that they'll carry with them forever."
A show for the whole family, parents and children alike should enjoy seeing the classic story come to life onstage, according to Stephanie Royse, Sooner Theatre marketing director .
"Willy Wonka Jr." will be performed at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at The Sooner Theatre, 101 E. Main in Norman. For more information, call 321-9600. "Reneé Selanders
