Guthrie has hosted the 89er Celebration for 72 years, and this year's event takes place from Wednesday to Saturday.

Along with the annual parade, which will be held at noon Saturday, and the rodeo, which will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday, food and craft vendors will line Guthrie's downtown streets. A chuck wagon feed will kick off the event on Wednesday.

ENTERTAIN AND EDUCATE
Jack Smith, post commander of the American Legion, has been in charge of the event for the past six years. He said the 89er Celebration is important to Oklahoma's history because it allows people to celebrate the land run.

"It gives them a look into the window of the past," Smith said. "They can get a better idea about what our history is about, and what it represents."

He said the 89er Celebration is also important to Oklahomans because it not only offers entertainment, but also education.

"It's important to us because it gives the children "¦ the knowledge "¦ about who the 89er people were and what happened," he said.
