MAPS for Kids efforts garnered Oklahoma City Public Schools an award in a nationwide contest this month.

The district earned honorable mention honors in the American School Board Journal's 2007 Magna Awards, which were presented in San Francisco Monday. The awards this year celebrated districts with programs that further community engagement and academic achievement through collaborative efforts.

Approved by Oklahoma City voters in 2001, the MAPS for Kids program spans more than 100 projects, including:
" school construction and renovation
" bus purchases and
" technology upgrades.

MILESTONE
Cliff Hudson, chairman of the district's board of education, lauded the work of teachers and staff and called the award "an important milestone," in a release.

"Oklahoma City itself is on the move, and this award showcases the up-and-coming talent we have in our school system," he said.

This year's Magna Award winners were selected from three enrollment categories. Oklahoma City took one of five honorable mentions in the 20,000-plus division. "Emily Jerman
