Chickasha venue offers plenty of pumpkin opportunities

Gazette staff October 16th, 2008

Create your own Oktoberfest with a night of pumpkin cannon shooting, mazes and farm animals.

Enjoy the autumn weather with a range of activities 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 1-8 p.m. Sundays at Reding Farm Maze and Pumpkin Patch in Chickasha.

Children can follow the yellow sorghum road in one of the five 8-feet-tall, corn-like mazes that feature cutouts of "The Wizard of Oz" characters. If wandering through corn isn't enough of a haunt, kids can creep their way through the 30-minute Haunted Wicked Witch trail Fridays and Saturdays.

Horse, sheep, and goats " oh my! Children can pet and feed animals, and Fridays feature the raccoon-led play "Cousin Clarabelle's Critters." The educational play has a "Beverly Hillbillies" setting, farm owner Nancy Reding said.

"Cousin Zeke, Cousin Clarabelle and cousin Ethel have a pet raccoon, and the play teaches kids how to be nice to the animals and not hurt them," she said.

Pumpkins purchased at the farm can find a Halloween home on the porch or be loaded into one of the farm's specially-made air cannons, which launches gourds and corn 100 feet. Who said kids don't like squash?

The farm's fall festivities continue through Oct. 31. Admission to the large maze is $10, while the small maze is $4. The pumpkin cannon is $1 per shot, and the 20-minute hayride is $2.

To reach the farm, take Interstate 44 West, exit right on U.S.-62 West, turn right on Ninth Street and follow it to Reding Farm, 614 Reding Road. For more information, call 222-0624.
