Edmond park features fables brought to life

Gazette staff October 30th, 2008

Pass through wooden gates and follow a trick-or-treat trail under the stars, jumping from one fairy tale to the next.

Charming scenes from classic fairy tales and nursery rhymes spring forth in the Storybook Forest, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at Spring Creek Park near Arcadia Lake, two and a half miles east of Interstate 35 on S.E 15th in Edmond.

Costumed or not, children armed with trick-or-treat bags can enter the magic forest and see scenes from favorite fables and stories brought to life. More than a dozen colorful and whimsically painted cutout scenes decorate the half-mile trail. Each scene features a posted excerpt that parents or children can read aloud while collecting candy.

Instead of knocking on strangers' doors, children will be greeted at every bend of Storybook Forest with familiar stories and characters they can take pictures of and interact with. Kids can trick-or-treat at Hansel and Gretel's gingerbread house and stop by the Three Little Pigs' home, which will be huffed and puffed down by the Big Bad Wolf. Even Humpty Dumpty's fall is creatively re-enacted at the Edmond park.

The site used to host an adult-themed Halloween trail, said park assistant Nicole Offutt, but organizers were eager to provide Halloween fun "for the kids."

Storybook Forest was created for children 12 and younger, and emphasizes fun rather than fright, she said. The park will also host a hayride and game area, and offer hot dogs and marshmallow roasting.

Children are $5 and accompanying adults are free. For more information, call 216-7470.
