Anticipation has left everyone in Candyland frazzled. The formal invitation to the Sugar Plum Fairy's dance in "The Nutcracker" is expected, and even her chief adviser and three apprentice fairies are anxious.

But the invitation's arrival is cause for celebration in Candyland. Fairy wings are dusted off while costumes are pressed and fitted. Tasty treats sent by a secret admirer make for a bad costume fitting for poor Sugar Plum Fairy. A new dancer will be chosen at Oklahoma Children's Theatre "Sugar Plum Fairy" performances through Dec. 19.

To be considered, fairies must pass the "magical star express test," which might be too much for clumsy apprentice Phoebe, played by Katie Postotnik, to handle. Phoebe is prone to trips and falls and even injures the Plum Fairy's ankle during rehearsal.

Alas the Rat King, played by Andi Dema, comes to the rescue, taking Phoebe under his tail and teaching her the art of dance, finesse and confidence. He also discovers the reason of Phoebe's incessant clumsiness: She needs glasses!

BOOST
With a boost in confidence " and specs bringing perfect pirouettes into focus " Phoebe passes the test and is chosen to perform the Sugar Plum Fairy dance at "The Nutcracker" for all to see.

Lyn Adams, executive director of Oklahoma Children's Theatre, said the play was "written a long time ago for a little girl that had to get glasses and was embarrassed to wear them."

"Sugar Plum Fairy" takes the stage 11 a.m. today and Friday, and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Children's Center for the Arts, 2501 N. Blackwelder.  The play continues 11 a.m. Dec. 17 and Dec. 19.

Tickets are $5 for children 2-12, and $7 for 13 and older.
