Edmond Historical Society & Museum exhibits 1889 camp

Gazette staff July 2nd, 2009

Scrub up with some lye soap, put on your best trousers and get ready for the 1889 Summer Camp at the Edmond Historical Society & Museum, 431 S. Boulevard.

Melissa Michie, aka "Miss Robinson, the schoolmarm," will teach campers in the Oklahoma's first one-room schoolhouse, said Christine Gibson, spokeswoman for the historical society. The Edmond Historic Preservation Trust restored the schoolhouse, which Gibson said opened at the museum last year.

The campers will use pen and ink, write on slates and make homemade ice cream and lye soap. On the last day of camp, parents can attend a performance of a skit the kids will prepare about life in the late 1800s. Afterward, there will be a picnic, where the homemade ice cream will be served, Gibson said.

Children are encouraged to dress up in the era's clothing.

"You don't have to go and buy anything. It's just how much the parents want to put in," Gibson said.

The goal of the camp is to show children of today how far technology has advanced and what little they had in the 1800s, she said.

"Melissa shows them the things they have now, and that they still had fun back then," Gibson said.

1889 Summer Camp is from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, July 9. The three-day camp is $30. Registration is required. For more information, call 340-0078.
