Libraries host first Children's Metro MusicFest

Gazette staff July 16th, 2009

Kids can rock out for six days at the first Children's Metro MusicFest, which has been booked at a dozen Metropolitan Library locations.

Local children's performer Monty Harper will kick off the festival 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library, 300 Park. Other performers scheduled through Friday, July 24, include Mr. Stinky Feet & the Hiccups, The DooDads, Bongo Barry, Dino O'Dell and the Veloci-rappers, Funky Mama and Buffalofitz, said Emily Williams, a young adult services coordinator at the Downtown Library. The series will stage at the Capitol Hill Library, Southern Oaks Library and Belle Isle Library, as well as ones in Midwest City, Bethany, Edmond, Del City and Warr Acres.

INSPIRATION
Williams said the festival was inspired by a similar event at the Kansas City Public Library, which has a big music festival for children every year. Many of the musicians performing this week also hail from Kansas, she said.

"We thought it would be fun to do a special week of performances," Williams said. "The bands sing about things kids are interested in, like food and toys. It's upbeat and fun."

Organizers expect crowds to range anywhere from 20 to 100 attendees per show, depending on the size of the library, she said.

The concerts are free.
