Halloween is just around the corner, and each year, new events pop up for people to celebrate the season.

But one event in Oklahoma City stands as one of the most unique traditions of its time: the Magic Lantern Celebration. At the north end of the Paseo Arts District, near N.W. 30th and N. Dewey, it has become a staple in the artistic community over the last 10 years.

The Magic Lantern Celebration was founded by Lorrie Keller, an artist and a dancer who created the event to help children and families find creative outlets within themselves. The event combines all forms of art, from dance and theater to visual art and writing.

"Through all the years of working with children, I believe that a celebration like this really captures their imaginations and their hearts," Keller said. "They become characters in a season that is full of stories and shadows."

SPREAD THE LIGHT
She said all children have creativity inside of them somewhere, but some simply need a touch of encouragement to find the confidence needed to unleash that creativity. This type of talent isn't always celebrated in every community, but the Magic Lantern Celebration ensures all of the little artists in Oklahoma can spread that light.

The festivities were also inspired from the mission of Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan, a nonprofit organization that fosters children's artistic abilities.

"We have been spotlighted as one of the leading children's dance companies in the world, throughout history," Keller said. "We approach the dance education from not only dance technique but also from the creative arts."

Children can create their own costumes and make art straight from the street, or enjoy pumpkins and a dance performance. Elaborate shadows pop into the Paseo gallery and shop windows and will last through Halloween.

"You won't find this festival anywhere else in the world," Keller said.

The free event is 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. An adult must accompany children. For more information, call 525-2688.
