Cox Convention Center welcomes Curious George Live

Gazette staff November 12th, 2009

Curious George is known by many as a cartoon monkey in both storybooks and movies, but for the first time, children across the metro can see the playful character live on stage. " Curious George Live" will stage Thursday to Sunday at the Cox Convention Center, 1 Myriad Gardens, for the show's inaugural tour.

Writer Jeremy Desmon created an original script specifically for this production, said Jill Taylor Anthony, an ensemble member and understudy for the tour. She said Curious George has been known to leave the stage to interact with audience members during the production.

"It's like your favorite cartoon coming to life," Anthony said.

In the show, Chef Pisghetti has a crisis and decides that he doesn't want to continue his cooking career. Trying to help, Curious George mails himself to Rome to enter the chef in the Golden Meatball Contest. Once The Man in the Yellow Hat figures out what George has done, he and other characters travel to Rome to track down their inquisitive simian.

Well-known characters will pop up alongside some new faces, Anthony said, making for a live experience both kids and parents can enjoy.

"It takes something they're already familiar with, characters they're familiar with, and they get to see them on stage before their very eyes," she said.

Anthony, who was born and raised in Broken Arrow, currently resides in New York City. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a fine arts degree in acting and has been on the road with the cast for the past two months.

"Curious George Live" stages 7 p.m. Thursday, 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday, 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, and 1 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Opening night tickets are $11; remaining shows are $13-$26.
