Oklahoma City Public Schools will open next fall with a new deputy superintendent, the district announced Thursday.

OKCPS named Memphis, Tenn., school administrator Brenda Cassellius to the position, in which she will head up  "planning, development, assessment, and improvement of instruction and educational programs," according to a release.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Cassellius has been serving as the middle school superintendent for 22,000 students in Memphis City Schools in Memphis, Tenn. Among other things, her accomplishments there include:

" Developing a "Blue Ribbon Behavior Initiative" designed to create positive school climates, encourage positive student behavior and incorporate intervention strategies.

" Garnering community grant partnerships.

" Making significant progress in improving math and reading scores.

Cassellius has 17 years of educational experience and is an education doctoral candidate for leadership and policy at the University of Memphis.

PHILOSOPHY

In a Memphis City Schools Insider feature, she explained her educational philosophy, stating her belief that all students can and want to learn, and the responsibility of principals and teachers to foster that.

"I believe it is critical that as a nation we recognize the issue of race, poverty and inequality in our public schools and that we resolve to finally do something real about it," she added. "I believe change can happen quickly if purposeful and grounded in effective strategies."

Cassellius will begin her work for OKCPS July 2. Her hiring follows the district selecting John Q. Porter as superintendent in April. "Emily Jerman
