Metro teens teach crafts to kids in 'craft rave'

Gazette staff December 31st, 2009

Metro teens will help kids express their crafty creativity during a workshop 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Southern Oaks Library, 6900 S. Walker. The Craft Rave was created and organized by the Metropolitan Library System's teen advisory board, said John Hilbert, young adult services librarian.

The teens will teach kids age 10 and older how to make plush toys, geometric paper cut-out pop-up cards, beaded jewelry and other craft items, he said.

Beyond offering weekend events for local youth, Hilbert said this event and similar workshops offered by the library give its teenage organizers valuable experience in developing and marketing programs for kids. Plus, he said, the library has come to rely on its teenage volunteers for their insight into what's currently "cool" with kids.

"They try to find crafts that appeal to teens and older children, but are easy enough for younger kids to put together," Hilbert said. "Everyone gets a lot out of it. The kids definitely respond better to working with the teens than they do the adults."

The Craft Rave is free. For more information or to preregister, call 631-4468.
