The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Museum, Bricktown Rotary and the Jim Thorpe Association will host the Warren Spahn Award Gala Tuesday to honor the careers of three Oklahoma sports figures, as well as recognize the accomplishments of today's athletes and sports broadcasters.

The annual award is named after Warren Spahn, who is considered among the greatest left-handed pitchers of all time, winning a record 363 games. He settled in Oklahoma after playing 21 seasons of professional baseball and managed the Tulsa Oilers for five seasons. In 1968, his club won the Pacific Coast League championship.

The gala will recognize the best left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball, an outstanding broadcaster with Oklahoma ties, high school softball and baseballcoaches, and 10 high school athletes. Mayor Mick Cornett said the event gives the only award to a major-league athlete in the state of Oklahoma.

Invited guests include 2009 Warren Spahn Award-winner C.C. Sabathia, pitcher for the New York Yankees, Baseball Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins and other former and current MLB players.

"This award gala is a major league event that brings a major-league athlete and major-league attention to Oklahoma City," said Bill Hickman, chairman of the gala board. "The announcement of C.C. Sabathia's win received coverage from coast to coast."

The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame & Jim Thorpe Museum, 4040 N. Lincoln. Individual tickets are $150. For more information, call 605-2375 or visit www.okcspahnawards.com. "Luke Atkinson
