The Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City just might "Free Your Mind" this weekend at its 60th annual Awards and Membership Gala with dinner, awards and a performance by Grammy-nominated R&B group En Vogue.
The event takes place 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The night will include
" silent and live auctions,
" an awards ceremony, and
" a performance by En Vogue.
Along with celebrating the organization's 60th year and awarding those who have made it possible, the gala's proceeds will go toward the Urban League's many services, including:
" finding jobs for the unemployed,
" mentoring and tutoring students,
" providing health education, and
" building affordable homes.
"Attending the Urban League Gala means more than just an evening out on the town; it means giving back to your community," said Valerie Thompson, president and chief executive officer, in a press release.
The league will award individuals and corporations who have contributed to the group with volunteer service, corporate support, board service and youth scholarships.
"For 60 years we have been working to assist African-Americans, other minorities and the poor to achieve social and economic equality," Thompson said. "We recognize that we cannot do this alone."
Established in 1946, the league provides direct services to more than 15,000 clients every year.
Sponsorships, tables and tickets are now available. For more information, call 424-5243 or visit."Lauren Hopkins
